How to Get to Blackgang Chine

Blackgang Chine is located on the southern tip of the Isle of Wight, set high on the cliffs at Blackgang, near Chale. Thanks to its dramatic coastal location, the journey is part of the adventure — whether you’re arriving by car, bus, bike or on foot.

Getting Here by Car

Driving is the easiest way to reach Blackgang Chine, especially for families.

Blackgang Chine is well signposted from Ventnor, Niton and Chale. Once you reach the Blackgang area, follow the brown tourist signs directly to the park entrance.

From key locations:

  • Ventnor: approx. 15 minutes

  • Shanklin: approx. 20 minutes

  • Newport: approx. 20 minutes

  • Cowes: approx. 45 minutes

  • Ryde: approx. 40 minutes

Getting Here by Bus

Public transport is a great option if you’re staying locally or visiting without a car, and the Isle of Wight's bus service is very well connected. 

Southern Vectis buses serve the Blackgang area, with a stop inside the park, right opposite the entrance...now that's service!

Bus route:

  • Route 6: Newport ↔ Ventnor (stops within Blackgang Chine's grounds)

Getting Here by Bike

Blackgang Chine sits along some of the Isle of Wight’s most scenic cycling routes.

  • Bike racks are available just to the side of the park entrance

  • Please note the final approach includes steep hills, typical of this part of the Island

Cycling is best suited to confident riders and e-bikes.

Visiting from the Mainland

If you’re travelling from the mainland, you’ll need to take a ferry to the Isle of Wight.

Ferry routes:

  • Southampton ↔ Cowes

  • Portsmouth ↔ Fishbourne

  • Lymington ↔ Yarmouth

Once on the Island, Blackgang Chine is around 30–40 minutes by car, depending on arrival port.
